Temple Emanu-El

1 East 65th St. at 5th Avenue

Architect Robert Kohn (1925-1930)

The magnificent Temple Emanu-El whose name proclaims “God is with us” is located on Manhattan’s upper east side at East 65th and 5th Avenue. The original building, founded in 1868, was located at 5th Avenue and 43rd Street but moved in 1925 to its present site, formerly the location of a John Jacob Astor residence. The Temple was dedicated in 1930 with additions of a New Emanu-El complex, Beth-El Chapel and Community House. It is in the Beth-El Chapel that one finds Oscar Bach’s glorious bronze and enamel doors and hanging lantern. The stair rails are beautifully executed in bronze and enamel and though not attributed firmly to Oscar Bach they exhibit his style, technique and choice of materials.
