Picture loading... Ashtray. Oscar B. Bach (stamped signature). New York, New York. Probably 1920-1930. Lead- plated copper alloy, felt. Height overall: 7/8"; Width overall: 6 1/8"; Depth overall 6 3/8".

The steeply bouged tray is enclosed by a broad flat rim, relieved at its upper proper left corner with a recessed depression to hold a cigarette. In the tray a lithe nude maiden is seen in profile at the proper right, head turned slightly downward as she plays a flute. In the lower proper left corner a squirrel sits facing her with tail curved over its back, the audience for her serenade. The lead surface of the object shows the beautiful irregularities of hammering and tool marks, and the surface patina is selectively reduced to allow a complex interplay with the tones of the underlying base metal.

The pleasing visual mass of this object is echoed by its surprising weight, and it is possible that the object is partially lead-filled. As the bottom of the object retains its original red felt backing in surprisingly good condition, details of construction have not been confirmed. The rear side is stamped Oscar B Bach.
