| Mirror Oscar B. Bach. New York, New York. Circa 1923. Copper alloy with dark brown chemical patina; glass; lacquer; tinned sheet iron. Height overall: 38''; Width overall: 22 1/2''; Depth overall: 1''; Frame height: 31 1/4''; Frame width: 20 1/2'', Glass height: 21''; Glass width: 10 3/8''. The framing panels of this Italianate mirror consist of foliate scrolls within rectangular borders, laid over lacquer panels. The side, top, and bottom panels contain vines with triangular leaves, textured fruit and leaves, and berries, all imposed over red lacquer. Each of the four corner panels depicts a four-leafed blossom on an open square device, imposed over black lacquer. Each of these eight lacquered panels is framed by a simple molding, and a ribboned slip molding surrounds the glass that lies within the frame made by the lacquered panels. Above this ornate rectangular frame is a pediment containing a classical mask with lobed hair or crown and down-turned mouth, flanked by converging S-scrolls with petaled flowers. Below the frame are complimentary bound scrolls, each with a hanging leaf pendant. The sheet metal back appears to retain its original overall green paint. |
