Pair of Lamps

Oscar B. Bach (stamped signature on applied tag). New York, New York. Probably 1920-1930. Copper alloy with brown chemical patina. Height overall: 33 1/4"; Diameter of base: 8"; Height of glass (sight size): 6 1/4"; Width of glass at top (sight size): 4''; Width of glass at bottom (sight size): 3''.

A finial in the form of a two-sailed galleon in a round surround is supported by a chalice device. An arched cross-brace with leaf motifs supports this finial and rises from a hinged square top with an outer frame of laurel wreaths. The hinged lid gives access to an internal socket within a four-sided glazed shade, each side having a trapezoidal piece of red glass behind an ornate grill consisting of a central foliate rondelle with an oak leaf and berry cluster, and four smaller rondelles containing respectively a berry cluster, a grape cluster with leaves, an oak leaf, and a four-petaled flower.

The supporting standard has a flared top, an upper section with an interesting surface that is both rope-twist and etched, a lower section with subtle baluster contours, and a bottom barrel passage. The stepped base of the standard is centered on a round concave base with overall hammered texture, four mounted lion heads, and a lower dentil band. A tag on the reverse of the base reads OSCAR.B.BACH / N.Y.©. The reverse of the finial bears the stamped mark #237.
